Understand the Monier roof tile guarantee and Higgins Roofing’s workmanship cover before choosing a new tiled roof or re-roof in Melbourne.
A Monier roof tile guarantee and our workmanship guarantee cover different parts of a roofing project. Monier’s product warranty relates primarily to qualifying defects in its tiles, while our separate workmanship guarantee relates to the roofing work we perform.
What Does the Monier Roof Tile Guarantee Cover?
The current Monier roof tile warranty provides 30 years of product cover from the date of purchase for eligible concrete and terracotta roof tiles, subject to the warranty conditions and exclusions.
The details differ slightly by material:
- Concrete roof tiles: Monier warrants concrete roof, ridge and barge tiles against manufacturing defects for 30 years.
- Terracotta roof tiles: Terracotta roof, ridge, barge and apex tiles have 30-year manufacturing-defect cover and 30-year colour-retention cover.
- Correct installation: The warranty requires the tiles to be installed by a qualified tradesperson in accordance with relevant requirements and Monier installation guides current at the time of purchase.
- Maintenance: Tiles must be cleaned and maintained in accordance with Monier guidance.
- Inspection before repair: Monier must be given a reasonable opportunity to inspect an alleged defective product in place before it is removed, repaired or replaced.
The warranty also contains exclusions. For concrete tiles, normal weathering, colour fading and the development of a matte appearance are not treated as manufacturing defects.
For terracotta tiles, natural colour variation is excluded. Both warranties also exclude damage caused or contributed to by factors such as incorrect cleaning, roof traffic, third-party materials, installation processes and certain external events.
Older roofs may have been sold under different warranty terms, so keep the documents supplied when your tiles were purchased.
Product Warranty vs Workmanship Guarantee
This distinction matters when a roof problem appears.
A manufacturing defect in a qualifying Monier tile may fall within the manufacturer’s product warranty. An issue arising from roofing workmanship is different because Monier’s current product warranty specifically excludes the installation process.
At Higgins Roofing, we state a seven-year guarantee on our workmanship. We install Monier and Wunderlich tiles through our new roof installation service and complete tile re-roofing throughout Melbourne.
However, a leak alone does not prove whether the tile or workmanship is responsible. Water entry can also involve storm damage, building movement, later roof work, maintenance issues or another component. The cause should be assessed before responsibility is assumed.
What Should You Do If a Roof Problem Appears?
Protecting a possible claim starts with documenting the issue rather than immediately removing tiles.
- Take photographs: Record damaged tiles, visible defects and internal water damage from a safe position.
- Locate your documents: Find the roofing quote, invoice, installation date and tile details.
- Contact your installer: Tell us what has occurred and provide photographs where possible.
- Avoid premature removal: If a manufacturing defect is suspected, allow an appropriate inspection before replacing the affected product.
- Consider external damage: Hail, fallen branches, accidental impact or other events may need to be considered separately.
- Keep written records: Save correspondence, assessments and repair recommendations relating to the issue.
Written product and workmanship guarantees do not necessarily replace statutory consumer rights that may apply to eligible building work in Victoria.
